Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How did you get so big?

A: Short answer, poor diet and sedentary lifestyle.

Long answer, there are many factors which led to my present state. First, my genes are working against me, obesity runs on both sides of my family. Second, generations of my family were raised in the South where biscuits and gravy are considered a food group. Finally, depression played a role too. Obesity can quickly turn into a vicious cycle of self hatred and eating to cope with the pain.

Q: How did you lose so much weight?

Long answer, see “How I’m Losing Weight

Q: What advice would you give someone who was just starting out on their weight loss journey?

A: 1. Figure out what works for you! Figure out what your favorite exercise is and also what foods you like to eat, and work from there.

2. Don’t panic or give up when you gain weight. It’s going to happen. That’s why it’s so helpful to log your food, exercise, and weight. Armed with that information, you can see what changes need to be made.

3. Seek the assistance of a counselor, most people gain weight because of emotional reasons.

4. Final suggestion: Don’t set goals based on weight, nor don’t say you’ll lose a certain amount of weight by a certain time. It’s a recipe for disaster. Do what my dietician friend Sonthe Burge says to do: “focus on the process of losing weight”. If you just focus on the weight itself, you won’t be focusing on the really important stuff like what you are eating and how much exercise you are doing. Focus on eating your calorie limit every day, focus on how much water you drink, and focus on getting your exercise in. Focusing on these things loses the weight.

Q: Have you thought about getting weight loss surgery?

A: No, because my father passed away from complications of his weight loss surgery (gastric bypass).

Q: Has your father’s death played a role in your current weight?

A: Short answer, no.

Long answer, honestly, I don’t know what it feels like to have a father because my dad passed away when I was one. I was so young that I don’t remember him. This doesn’t bother me because I was so young when my dad passed. If I were older, then things would be different.

Q: Do you see a counselor?

A: Yes, I am seeing Dr. Dan Bowman at Personal Relationships. – I’ve always been obese, check out my childhood photos. I was always the biggest person in school from kindergarten to college, and I’m quickly getting to a weight and size that I’ve never been (I’m getting smaller). Also, socially things are changing. I’m used to being the outcast, and now I’m participating in a lot of social activities. So, there are a lot of little demons to deal with.

Q: Do you go to church?

A: Not right now, when I’m ready, I’ll go back.

Q: Are you married?

A: No

Q: Do you have a girlfriend?

A: No

Q: Do you have any kids?

A: No
