Non Scale Victory

by Stephen Vinson on September 9, 2010

You never know when they’re gonna happen. They just do, and they always feel GREAT! NON-SCALE VICTORIES!!!! Today was the day for one.

I prefer to walk in the morning because the weather is cooler and I can also get the walk out of the way, first thing. Today I slept late and I was extremely tired, so I dragged my butt to work and drank a lot of coffee.  Anyway, I decided to walk right here at the mall where my office (cubby hole) is located. I’ve walked around this strip mall plenty of times in the past, however it’s been at least a year since I’ve walked this route.

The loop around this mall is easy but there are two hills that have always given me problems. I used to just walk one loop around the mall, then walk on a different path by the mall so I would only have to walk the hills once.

Well, today when I walked the loop, I didn’t have to stop or slow down on the hills. My breathing increased, but not by much. The funny part was that I was dreading the hill. I was preparing myself mentally for the challenge, then as I’m walking I noticed that this hill was a piece of cake (well, piece of fruit.) All of those times that I walked the infamous hill of death at the Mountain Brook YMCA have paid off. My legs are stonger, my endurance has increased, and my weight is lower.

What I love the most about today’s experience is that I noticed that these NSVs are happening more frequently. I love the thought of having two or three NSVs in a month. :)

Yeah yeah! Good job, Stephen! It is really awesome when we can do something in exercise with ease that used to be so hard.

That is so great to hear! My Dad just started working out 2 months ago (he is over 70) and has also enjoyed some non-scale victories. He also feels better than he has in a long time. The thing about NSVs is that while you can tell people about them, until they've experienced them for themselves, they can't fathom why you'd get so excited about them. Thanks for sharing this!

That's awesome! I've been following your blog for quite a while, but don't think I've left any comments yet. :) You are such an inspiration and doing so crazy well on your journey!

NSVs are absolutely awesome–such a fabulous way to prove to yourself how your life actually IS getting better. I actually just blogged about one of my first NSV's too (http://diana-journeyofalifetime.blogspot.com if you feel like reading it).

Way to go, and thanks for the encouragement!

Great work! Keep it up! I chuckled at “well, piece of fruit.” I will probably steal that line and use it as my own so please don't copyright it. Thank you.
