Notes

I’m glad that I’m honestly logging my food and exercise. It’s really helping me to see where I need to tweak things.

The problem with my drinking is that I have a high tolerance for alcohol. :( Thus, I drink what seems like a lot.

I will be walking in the morning before my day starts.

I’m pretty excited about tomorrow morning. Danny is having an info meeting for his couch to 10k group, and then they’ll kick off on Monday.

12 beers–wow! I would be passed out on the floor at that point! But then, I am very much a lightweight.

Good job on writing it all down, even when it's a mess. There are plenty of people who would omit the alcohol and wonder why they didn't lose weight when their food journal looked good. Don't be so quick to say you have a high tolerance for alcohol and excuse the 8-12 beers. I have a high tolerance for ice cream and that doesn't excuse 8-12 scoops, right? If you're training and actively trying to lose weight, 1-2 beers (maybe even 4-6) would be a wonderful treat! 8-12 is not a treat. Yeah, treat yourself! Absolutely! Moderation is key. Drink a glass of water between each beer next time if you have to be actively drinking. That would help the inevitable dehydration following alcohol consumption.
Thanks for such a great, personal, REAL blog!

Why is booze even on your list? It serves no nutritional purpose. What does your counsellor say about that? Shows a disprespect for your body and your brain. Just because you have a high tolerance doesn't mean that you have to seek that level. It's not worth it! It's going to dehydrate you more, and undo all the hard work. You and your body and your mind all deserve to be treated better than that! YOU are worth it. Please make an effort.

My sister was dieting and let herself have one night of drinking (not per week, but just one night). She got those 55 calorie beers and had about 3 and wondered why she didn't feel a thing. She wasn't drinking to get drunk but should have been on her behind after 2. It turns out the 55 cal beer has half the alcohol as other beers. I looked at the fine print. Being in a family of engineers, we figured out it is just better to drink the regular beer if you are interested in alcohol content. That could be why you drank 8-12.

Just a factual note, I realized

I hope you are not killing your liver. And when you get all this weight off and have your surgery we have to send you to AA

Hey Stephen, I'm just curious what crossed your mind after you typed “8-12 beers”? LOL – when you said you gave yourself one alcohol 'pass' a week, I thought that meant one alcoholic beverage. Your Friday night alcohol binge can shock not only your liver, but also your brain. Binging is a chemical slam to the brain, similar to the slam binge eating is to your GI system and your gall bladder and metabolism. It's actually easier on your body if you had 2 beer a day than if you binge drink. I don't advocate drinking at all, because it has zero nutritional value, and it clouds judgment. However, if you ARE going to drink, maybe just limit yourself to one or two beers and savor the taste, and drink equal amounts of water to help fend off dehydration. If you need to feel a buzz to enjoy yourself, it might be valuable to approach this topic with some introspection. You're a great guy, you have a lot to offer, and you sound like you're lots of fun – so you shouldn't need all that alcohol to enjoy yourself with your friends. They like you for who you are sober too!
