New Paddles and Snorkel, Focus on the Process, and Setbacks

I tried out the new paddles and snorkel this morning at the pool. They’re pretty cool. The paddles must be a little bit bigger than the ones that I borrow from Moe, because my arms were worn out. The snorkel is awesome!!! I didn’t have to concern myself with coming up for air. It’s going to allow me to focus more on my stroke technique, rather than coming up for air every few strokes.

Focus on the Process

Sonthe, the local dietician, and I discussed the importance of focusing on the process of losing weight rather than focusing on the end result. In the past I was too focused on losing a certain amount of weight by a certain deadline. I was so focused on the reaching that deadline that I didn’t focus my attention on the gym or my eating. So it was easy to slip up.

If you think about it, we can’t directly control how much weight we lose. Our bodies do their own thing. However, we can directly control how much we eat and how much much we exercise, and that should be our driving force every day. When I wake up, I like to think about what plans I have for the day, and I start out by telling myself, “okay, I’m going to eat 1500-2000 calories today and walk 1 mile at the gym and swim after that.” I used to tell myself, “I’ve got to step it up today because I’ve got to lose 15 pounds by the end of next week.” Nowhere did I mention what I was going to do to lose that 15 pounds…. Focus on the process.

Setbacks

I’ve been doing this lifestyle change long enough now to know that there are going to be setbacks in your plans. When you least expect it, you’ll get sick, or you’ll get injured. When this stuff happens, it’s survival time. Sometimes weight will be gained in these moments, sometimes you’ll lose weight, but know that when the storm has blown over, it’s time to get back on it!! Some of my setbacks have included not meeting a weight loss goal, holidays, vacation, foot injury, and the infamous cpap machine. :)

I was really proud that I only gained a few pounds throughout the whole broken CPAP machine episode, and now I’m back at it!!

So there, this preaching just hit me. I thought that I’d share. :)

Have a great Thursday!!!!!

I agree...I think focusing on a certain number each week will lead to disappointment. I've had to re-train my brain to stop focusing on the number I weigh and more on how my clothes fit. I adopted a dog in April and he has helped me tremendously!! I definitely move more LOL...we walk a lot! But because of that, we've met our neighbors and he's helped me feel more positive about things.

It sounds like you are really taking the time to get your head on straight about all this weight loss stuff. You should be super proud of yourself. :-)
  • Process vs. end result thinking is so important. Thanks for bringing that up. I think I lose sight of that sometimes and it's a nice reminder. Especially on a day when I'm up a few pounds overnight.
