What is wrong with me?

I had a lot going for me in 2009 and I did my best to throw it away starting in mid-November to now. This blog was started in Feb 2009 at a starting weight of 632 lbs, and I was successful in losing 134 pounds getting down to 498 lbs. My blog was even mentioned on health.com and in Health Magazine. Also, people were gonna give me stuff to lose weight. Trent’s gonna take me to the Talladega 500 Nascar race when I lose 300 pounds, and Jack Sh*t was going to give me a $100 gift certificate to NASCAR.COM for the Talladega trip. Now in six weeks I have gained back 40lbs. It’s depressing and humiliating.

Why did this happen?

I was so focused on blogging, twitter, and facebook that I let things go at work and with my finances. As a result, I almost had to file bankruptcy. Fortunately, I didn’t have to. Another reason why this happened is that I was more focused on the blog than I was at actually getting my workouts done. Finally, I got depressed when I figured out there was no way that I was gonna meet the deadline for the 300 lb challenge.

What am I gonna do about it?

I tell you, this weight loss sh*t is hard, and I was wrong, there is crying in weight loss. Also, my “Think and Lose Weight” idea didn’t work for me. Sadly, what’s a little relieving is that I’m not the only person to struggle losing weight. My uneducated guess is that over 90% of Americans that need to lose more than 30lbs struggle to lose the weight. In a nutshell, it’s tough to lose weight.
In 2010 I am going to focus all of my efforts on the little details. My sole purpose in life this year is going to be to do the following three things: eat right everyday, exercise everyday, and take care of business at work. I am still gonna blog and be on facebook, but I’m gonna tone it way down. I will post every day, but it will be at home at night, not during the day at work. (today is an exception) Also, I will facebook at night, not during the day at work.
I am still gonna walk the BE&K 5k in Feburary, but I am not gonna walk the Mercedes half marathon.

Variety

One of the biggest downfalls in my food plan in 2009 was a severe lack of variety. I ate the same stuff nearly everyday. I am so sick of hamburger patties and salads, I don’t care to ever eat them again. Think of it as watching your 3 favorite movies everyday for six months. You’d be so sick of those movies, that you’d be spraying lighter fluid on the DVD’s and burning them in your front yard.
Well, I luckily found a remedy to this problem. I was grocery shopping and was looking at the magazines on the magazine rack, and saw this magazine, Clean Eating Magazine, and no it’s not a magazine for Overeaters Anonymous or people with eating disorders (but, apparently I do have an overeating disorder) Anyway, there is a diet called The Eat Clean Diet by Tosca Reno, and no, they aren’t paying me to promote their diet.
In the back of the magazine there is a 2 week eating plan which consists of a lot of foods that I like to eat and also some new things to try. For example, I have never cooked with tofu. I figure this will be an adventure into new foods and provide the much needed variety to my food plan.
As time permits I can share photos of the recipes that I prepare and write about my new food adventures. So, starting next week, I am going to do the two week food plan in the back of the Jan./Feb. issue of Clean Eating Magazine.

Well today’s post is way too long. Tomorrow I will tell you about my visit to the Doctor, and tell you about his reaction to my 40 pound gain.

Have a happy new year, and remember buzzed driving is drunk driving. DON’T DO IT!!!

  • Hi Steven, Happy New Year. You are not alone. In 2009 I had alot of ups and downs and couldn't wait for the new year to start over. I gained some of the weight that I lost, but that just shows we lost it once and we can do it again.

    Best of luck buddy,
    Scott
  • You definitely are not alone. I had a similar weight gain from November to year-end. I haven't checked in on you in quite a while and was SO PLEASED to see your progress. The new picture posted is fantastic. Remember what you have accomplished and move on. It's a new year with new adventures waiting for you. Go Team Stephen!
  • Tammy Ortagus
    Hey babe,

Oh there is most definitely crying in weight loss....most definitely. I gained 11 lbs from Nov. to Dec. for oh so many reasons (excuses). So no, you are not alone.

There is one, and only one, secret to this weight loss business and I'm going to let you in on it: NEVER GIVE UP. Your life is just too important. You are too important.

You've got heart Stephen. You're going to beat this thing. 2010 is going to be a much better year for the both of us. What do you say we get our attitudes in the right place and get this done together? I'm here for you. Pop over to my blog and say hi anytime, or email me anytime. We're all here for the same reason friend. :)
  • I came back here to check on you and to ask to please not give up. I know how discouraging it can be to lose weight and then gain it back... but its NOT too late to turn it around, you DO NOT have to gain it ALL back. Please turn it around, you can do it!
  • i read tosca's book back in march and i've been clean eating ever since. no more franken-food for me. you have had an amazing year and should be proud. looking forward to following you in 2010!
  • Stephen, you set almost impossible to reach goals. Do you realize that you lost a whole person or more?? You accomplished a heck of a lot that some of us can't even comprehend. I bitch moan and groan because I need to lose about 40 lbs and you have lost a lot more than that. I have always been worried about you because of the high goal that was impossible for anybody to lose 300 lbs in a year.

I knew or felt like you had "backslid" when you were not blogging. That was why so many of us probably were hollering where are you? Well you know what it is ok. WE ALL SIN!!! BUT don't think about it. Put it aside and start from right now. Dont look back look forward and don't beat yourself up. IT IS OK.

Have you ever thought about Weight Watchers? You have so much food choices there is something for everybody.

YES WE ALL ARE STILL YOUR FANS and we believe in you. When you April impossible goal gets here no you will have not lost your weight but YOU HAVE NOT LOST US EITHER. You will do it and when you do you by then will have worked out what is deep seeded in you to make you want to eat when you shouldn't and then we wont even know the "new" Stephen.

Please do not give up. It is ok that you messed up. After all you are human.

I am glad you are back and glad you are on the road to healthy eating and inspiring us. One day at a time, one pound at a time. I try to tell myself..If I lose only 1 lb a week that is 52 lbs a year.. Pretty good weight loss if you ask me. YOU WILL SUCCEED!!!!!! Dont hide from us anymore! We are here for you. Nothing to be ashamed of.. Just start from right now!
    Chris
  • No more hiding, and I'll be coming over when I get to the 200 lb loss mark. Thank You!!!!!!
  • Carol
Glad you are back. EVERY one of us has set backs. The difference is successful people get back on track..the others let it snowball and go back to their old habits. You ARE back on track. Take it slow and change your life one step at a time. When I started reading blogs and losing weight I noticed that most people did the same exact things and it really was pretty elementary: Exercise: doesnt have to be major , they just do SOMETHING most days. Eating: they all watch what they eat and try to be healthy MOST days..not ALL days because everyone needs a break occasionally. PHILOSOPHY: they all dust themselves off and get back on track after a setback. I followed those principals and I am almost at goal and I KNOW you will be too. HANG IN THERE...it's a long process, but SO WORTH IT.
  • Losing weight is definitely hard. You have come so far and you know what you need to do to get going back in the other direction. Just think, even with gaining 40 lbs back you have still lost almost 100 lbs. Think of if you hadn't tried this journey in 2009. Would you be almost 700 lbs?
  • OMG-- I am so glad you're back. I have lost 130 pounds so far, but that progress isn't one week after another of success. Between May and the beginning of July and again around the holidays I had periods where I either lost my mojo or just voluntarily decided to eat whatever I wanted and not exercise.

Like you, I was able to re-focus. That's the important part Stephen, that you came back. That takes great courage and I admire you more for that than whatever weight you lose or don't lose.

TOO MANY TIMES I have have sat here commenting on blogs when I should have been exercising or working-- so I hear that, BIG TIME, and it's something I have to be mindful of myself going forward.

I have been eating clean for several months and my weight loss really picked up after I started that. Some aspects took me awhile to get used to but I feel great now and it is all worth it!

Again, I am so glad you're back. I have thought of you often and prayed for your return.
  • Hey Stephen, you just found out you are human and not perfect, is all. This *IS* a hard journey, but one worth traveling because we learn.

Not eating the same darn thing all the time is one good lesson... I know I did that for a while and got sick to death of chicken salad. Now I eat a wider variety and it's better. However, don't get so caught up in trying new recipes that you overwhelm yourself. Eating clean is all very well and good... but it's not difficult whatsoever to eat clean AND eat too much! Just be aware of that and watch portions.

On the blogging thing... your life, your health, those are important. Accountability is important. You don't have to blog/Twitter/Facebook or whateverfulltime to achieve a good life, good health and accountability. Tone it back as needed and put the priorities on the things that really count. Post and tweet counts aren't one of them.

You can stop the backsliding now. Just go forward. Some of that 40 pound regain could be water, drink lots and get back on track NOW! And have a great new year!
  • Stephen, don't worry! Don't use this as an excuse to beat yourself up. The lessons you are learning right now are the lessons of being human. And someday, I predict you will be helping people just like you to be healthier.

You must lose weight for the right reasons. It is going to help you have a better life, live longer and happier. Don't lose weight just to get free stuff.

I think you know that. These are all valuable lessons! No unfriendly self-talk. You will lose the 40 and you will keep going! Failure is NOT an option. You are strong and you will do it.

We are all here for you. You will be just fine. Happy 2010!!!
  • Hi stephen,
I am so glad yo figured out it isn't about talladega.
    It's about you.
    Here is something....
    I can't believe I am doing this.
I will send you a 50 dollar walmart gift card when you lose your weight to a healthy bmi.
I don't need to see a five pound drop a week.
I am willing to hang in there until it is done.
    I would do more but I can't.
If it takes you three years to hit goal.
I will be on my blog blogging about maintenance.
You say "Chris, I hit my goal weight"
and that 50 dollar gift card will be in the mail.
It's more about you stephen than anything.
It's about what you want out of life.
I like your change in priorities.
I like your shift in vision.
One pound, one day at a time.
It's worth it, and there is nothing wrong with you.
    Hugs,
    Chris
  • Chris, you are too sweet!! I really appreciate your offer, but I want to lose for me, and I know that sometimes fifty bucks is hard to come by. My mission is not to get gifts and prizes from friends, but it's to get this weight off. How about this, next year when I do the Make-A-Wish Dream Team program again, maybe you can make a donation. Even if it's a dollar that's cool because every dollar counts.

Trent and Jack Sh*t have said that the 300 pound challenge is still on, but I am going to officially call it off. My desire is strong to get this weight off, and like I said before, I want to do this for myself and for my health. The time has come for me to put my health first. Later I can enjoy the benefits of getting the weight off.

Again, thank you so much, and I hope you have a wonderful 2010!!!!
  • You're back! That's a good thing. Sorry that you had a severe step back, but what's important now is you have a plan to get back to where you were, and to keep losing weight. :)

Having variety in your diet is essential, in my opinion. I know that I can't eat the same foods all the time, and you shouldn't be forced to just because you're "dieting." I hope that new diet works out well for you; if there are tasty recipes please share! Good luck, Stephen! You can do this!
  • Sorry to hear you got off track, but don't give up... and if you find that you're not crazy about the recipes in that book, continue to try other books, the South Beach Diet has some yummy recipes, (I'm not on South Beach Diet, but I did read it and learned a lot of tricks that I still apply, as well as some good recipes).

I wish you the best of luck, just get back on track! Even if you miss your chance to go to Talladega if you lose the 300 pounds you will be so glad.

I'm keeping you in my prayers.
  • The only thing you're doing wrong is beating yourself up! Be proud for what you've accomplished, but even more importantly be proud that you recognize that you're not happy and WANT to be happy!

The most important lessons you'll ever learn will be taught to you by your failures. You've accomplished more in the last year than most people do in a lifetime and you did it for YOU!

    Keep up the good work!!!
  • Losing weight IS tough and there is nothing 'wrong' with you. In fact, you should be very proud of the fact that you're starting 2010 nearly 100lbs lighter than you started 2009! :)

Well done for taking control again now, before you regained all the weight back again. I can honestly say I know what it's like to lose 245lbs and regain more than 150 of them, so I'm very proud of you for stopping your slight regain in its tracks before it became too much to handle.

Look forward to reading about our continued successes in 2010! Have a fantastic New Year!
  • While your heart was in the right place, I think that losing 134 pounds in one year might have been too large of a goal (sure you've lost 98lbs so far). I think it's absolutely wonderful that you lost all the weight you have so far, but don't beat yourself up for gaining 40 pounds. Sure that can be detrimental to a weight loss plan, but look at what you've done so far!

The holidays can also put a major kink into plans; the food is more than yummy to pass up and we just lose it sometimes.

I think that the people who want to take you to those places should realize that you've lost a lot so far and should just take you. People fall behind all the time, but it's the courage to pick yourself back up and getting back into things.

    Good luck Stephen!
  • Here for you my friend. E-mail me anytime. Stephen, you're not alone.

    My best,
    Sean
  • findingradiance
Stephen, I am so glad to see you back. Losing a lot of weight is hard shit, I agree with you. You can keep going. Backsliding happens - but it's most important to get back on doing the right thing. Don't think of it as starting over, you are continuing on. You are stopping this before you gain back all of the weight. I love that you have learned from this what the problems are and are giving yourself to tools to move forward.
  • Dude - you can do it. Out of all the weight you lost you only gained 40 back, which means you are still down. You've recognized where you've gone wrong and you know what to correct - so get at it!

Also - don't worry about us here in blog land. I love reading your blog, but I'd rather you never blog again and loose the 300 pounds than blog every day and never get anywhere.

You can do it and you know what you need to do - so like Nike says, just do it!

Happy new year and good luck!
  • Amber
    Good luck!
  • Deb
Everyone stumbles now and then. Forgive yourself and move forward. Sounds like you have some plans in place to do just that.

    Happy New Year!
  • You can get those darn 40 lbs off in no time. Just remember....moderation in all things. You will find "your" balance.

Suceeding is failing till you don't! I just read that in that new Mitch Albom book, Have A Little Faith. It fits!

Can't wait to read what the doctor said.

    Here's to 2010!
  • Don't beat yourself up - weight loss is hard. I'll take it a step further too, while blogging is great, it can get in the way. We have to remember that blogging us just a tool we use. If that tool is preventing us from achieving the ultimate goal, then we need to rethink whether the tool is being used properly. Whatever you do, don't give up. That is the only way to fail. As long as you keep plugging away you are going to make it. Sure, you may not make it to Talladega, but you know what, that is small stuff in comparison to improving your health. You can do it!
  • I've been clean eating for several months. I think you will enjoy the change and you can have quite alot when the food is healthy. Glad you are back. Take care and have a happy new year!
  • What's wrong with you? You lost your balance, Stephen, and it happens to the best of us. When you're juggling too many commitments, the one that most often drops is the commitment to your own health and wellbeing.

Truthfully, I was worried about you when you dropped off the blogging scene, because I knew that a lot of people lose their accountability when they quit posting. I was also scared that the numbers simply weren't working for you to hit your Talladega goal and that you'd lose heart and hope when you realized it.

So... fresh start. Forty pounds sucks, but it's not the end of the world. It simply puts you a month to six weeks off track, but it's nothing you can't handle.

And here's the dealio: the reason you should be doing this isn't for a trip or for a cash prize... it's because it'll change your life for the better in so many ways, only a few of which you even realize at this point.

I'm still rooting for you, big guy, and I'll still drop the gift certificate on you when you make your weight. But let's not put any crazy deadlines on it, okay? Do it the right way and let's make 2010 a year for the record books...
  • Thank you so much Jack. I really appreciate your friendship, and you are one of the funniest writers I've read.

I am officially calling off the 300 pound challenge because, like you said, I have got to do this for me. Don't worry, my desire to lose weight is even stronger now than before. I am going to lose the weight for my health.

This is gonna be a record year for me, and I wish nothing but the best for you my friend.
  • Stephen, I love your honesty! You are so right, there surely is crying in weight loss - and a lot of it! I can't count how many times I have broken into tears because I was so frustrated, upset, pissed off or overwhelemed. Losing weight is not for the faint of heart. But what counts is that you are still here, fighting. FIGHT Stephen, FIGHT.

Blogging, twittering, and all this social media is hard work. If it isn't helping you in your healthiness journey, don't do it. Or find a way to do it that helps you. Maybe blogging daily isn't your thing but a weekend update works. The hardest thing about losing weight is that what works for one doesn't work for another. So keep mixing things up until you figure out what works for you. I know its an emotional roller coaster but I am so proud of how far you've come, for everything you've achieved and for what you will achieve in the future.

    B>YOU CAN DO THIS!
