Getting my mojo back

by Stephen Vinson on November 5, 2009

I’m finally getting my mojo back. It’s amazing how quickly we can allow a couple of bad days to affect us. I see a lot of weight loss blogs where people are doing great for a few weeks, then all of a sudden they stop posting. Then they’ll come back a few weeks later, usually back on track. I’ve got a friend right now that was doing extremely well, but now he hasn’t posted anything for 4 weeks. I’ve been in the same boat. It’s not fun. We end up feeling like a failure.

I’m learning that I’m not the only one that goes through this. We are all human, and in our planning for weight loss, we set high goals. Which is great, but we all must strive to work our hardest to meet those goals, and forgive ourselves when (not if) we don’t do as well as expected. We also must realize that there are going to be setbacks. The most common setbacks are illness and injuries. There are two things that we can do: do our best to prevent illness and injuries, and plan for them. The preventive stuff is what we commonly see on TV: wash your hands, cover your mouth, take vitamen C, stretch before and after exercising, etc. Planning, though, is the smartest thing we can do. Plan ahead for the bad times.

So here’s my plan for when I feel down about not following my nutrition and exercise plans:

  1. Forgive myself. (Like I said before, we’re all human, we all make mistakes.)
  2. Workout. – No matter how much I’ve eaten, or if I slacked off, from now on, I am gonna get that workout in.
  3. Call or email a buddy – Setup a support system with friends. These friends can be your local friends or online friends. If you need a support buddy, let me know. I have a bunch of online friends that can help. Contact me here. Also, see below about the upcoming MizFit Motivational Matchups.
  4. Finally, immediately start following my nutrition and fitness plans. There is no tomorrow. Start right now!!!

Other setbacks that we need to plan for are special occasions, holidays, birthdays, and vacations. If we at least have a plan, we don’t feel helpless.

What are your plans for those bad times?

If you haven’t seen this already, MizFit Motivational Matchups are BACK!!!! MizFit and PriorFatGirl are teaming up for the third motivational matchup where they will pair you with a motivational buddy. Once you have a buddy, you and your buddy decide on how to contact each other and how often to check in. I am excited about this because I am realizing that I need all of the motivation and support that I can get. There is no fee and no rules. All they do is pair you with a motivational buddy, and then you both decide what you’re gonna do. Here are all the details.

Finally, here is yesterday’s workout:

  • Dumbbell Upright Rows with 20lb Dumbbells… 2 sets of 10 reps
  • Dumbbell Squats with 20lb Dumbbells… 2 sets of 10 reps
  • Dumbbell Clean & Press with 20lb Dumbbells… 1 set of 10 reps and 1 set of 8 reps
  • Modified Push Up… 2 sets of 10 reps
  • Dumbbell Curls with 20 lb Dumbbells… 2 sets of 15 reps

Mojo a-go-go! Glad to see you back in the saddle and love, love, love that ‘forgiveness’ is step one of your plan. I can relate to it. I’d be nowhere without forgiveness. Funny how the weight-loss industry never talks about such things when it’s such an important part of the process.

Here’s to staying on track and forgiving ourselves when we deviate.

Yay for you! I’m so pleased you’re back on track again!

I would love to a motivational buddy to someone who would like to be the same for me, so I’ll definitely be checking out that site a little later.

You’re spot on with your plan – it took me a LOT longer to realise the exact same things, so well done!

Bye for now

Patsy :)

Forgiveness and grace. It’s just a process. Odds are, we will make mistakes in this journey, but only one thing will make us extremely not ordinary successes in spite of them: never letting those mistakes stop us.

We may fall down for a day, or a week (or 3 weeks as I did here recently), but as long as we get back up and start back on the path we desire, we will succeed. And you and I especially, man, what successes we’ve already acheived, and holy crap, what amazing successes we have to look forward to. We can make our lives whatever we want, and, yep, we will.

Thanks very much for the email brother, good looking out.

Now, we’re back.

Time to kick ass.

Forgiveness is the bomb! I know I can’t be perfect all the time, and when I make mistakes, I just have to acknowledge, forgive myself and move on. It’s a life journey… and we can’t let lapses toss us backwards.

Setbacks happen. The trick is to not get completely derailed and to extend the period before the next setback hits. I’m a real “one day at a time” kinda guy. I just stick to making sure I do right by myself today, because that’s all I really have any control over right now. It’s a very empowering feeling to be in bed at night and reflect on how I kicked that day’s ass. It puts a lion in my heart to get up and attack the next day.

You’ve got this, Stephen.

Hello – I’m Stephen’s trainer. That’s me on the Fitness Together Picture on the right side in the black shirt. I have the unique priveledge of meeting Stephen several days a week and watching him absorb fitness training like a sponge. Stephen is going to go far because of his determination to push through every obsticle. I could tell that he was down Tuesday when he showed up. But when I told him that I had pulled myself out of so many emotional pits in my lifetime he sorta perked up some. Exercise has been my mainstay through the thick and thin and I encourage you all to make it a lifelong journey and not a destination. And pit yourself against yourself only – you are not in a race to beat anyone…it’s gotta be about you – for you – and when it’s all over with you can say “I did my very best”

I totally agree with your new plan. You have progressed SO much over these many months that Tom and I have been following you.

It is a constant mindset, a determination, and even though you have had some setbacks, I notice that you have always gotten yourself back.

Keep taking your fish oil in high doses. The main reasons why Tom and I want you to do this is that high doses of fish oil with help you to recover after workouts, helps reduce inflammation in the body, so it assists you with injuries. It also helps ease the joints which are constantly under strain. And for some reason, it makes you happier and more upbeat.

Remember back in the summer when you tried them and said you felt more upbeat? At BJ’s the 1200mg caps are just $9.99 for 300 caps. Take about 4 at every meal for a while and you will see the difference!

Glad to hear that you are back working out. You have already lost a tremendous amount of weight this year. The more you lose the harder and slower it will get. Just hang in there.
