Good Weekend and Gyms Suck

by Stephen Vinson on September 13, 2009

This has been a good weekend. This morning I walked the hill of death again.

Tomorrow, I’m gonna pick up a bowflex from Chris Weeler from Locust Fork. Chris reads and comments on my blog, and is giving me her bowflex because she never uses it. I am so appreciative to Chris.

My buddy Andy said we can put the bowflex up in his office, and I’ll be working out with him every afternoon. Both he and I are excited. I plan on also taking my few dumbbells up to his office. I beleive he has some also. We can use the dumbbells with the bench of the bowflex.

Also, yesterday I canceled the gym membership. So, that means I lost my sign-up fee and first month’s payment.(aprx $104.00) I was hoping they would refund my money because I never worked out, but I signed an agreement, and at first they were going to make me pay for two more months, but they allowed me to just go ahead and cancel. Needless to say, I plan on never dealing with any gym ever again. Especially the big box outfits. All they care about is their bottom line. The salespeople at these places remind me of car salesman. They made me come in to the gym to cancel, and then they tell me that they don’t agree with my decision, and that I will plateau in 2-4 weeks with the bowflex, and people never workout at home. blah, blah, blah

I feel that if people have the gear, no matter if it’s at home or at the gym, they will work out if they want to.

By the way, I canceled the membership because I’m getting the Bowflex.

To end this post on a positive note, here’s a picture of Cracker in his newest outfit:

What that dude said was complete and utter bullsh*t. I never would have stepped foot in the gym at 5'3 and 262 pounds. I started off the first four months walking daily. People don't workout cause they don't work out. It has nothing to do with location. ugh, i can't stand people, don't listen to that jerk. I JUST started going to the gym, but I lost my first forty pounds WITH ABSOLUTELY NO PLATEAUS by cutting my calories to about 1700 a day and walking two to three miles six days a week, THATS IT, AND I'm a girl. What a Skinny creep. Good luck with your bow flex and your walking. Wishing you the best.Chris

kinda sad to hear you cancelled the gym, but I trust you will commit to the new plan of the bowflex! Sucks they kept your $$$…don't know if it's just a Texas thing, but we get 3 days to "change our mind" on any contract. Wish you well, congrats on the huge hill yesterday!

I am not big on gyms myself. I think it takes an extra bit of commitment to show up to a gym daily. For me, a simple walk and some body weight exercises does it just great. The bowflex will be a good addition as well. Enjoy your new equipment.

Wow – getting a bowflex for free – that's awesome! Totally bogus about plateauing without a gym membership. I think it's great that you're working out with someone. Cracker is precious!

Totally agree about hating the gym thing. I belong to a rec center which is not as spiffy as most actual gyms, but there is zero pressure to join and you can't really cancel because you just pay for a set amount of time at once, so it's not like they can try to be dicks if you want to cancel. I totally know what you mean about them being like car salesmen. I did join a Gold's Gym once and I went in their not even intending on joining, just wanted to look around, and they totally suckered me into it. I think I went a total of 20 times for my two-year membership.

Both working out at home and at the gym have their advantages. I liked the socializing at gyms. I used to work out 4 to 5 days a week at a Y and always enjoyed seeing the same folks. Of course, now I don't have that time and find having equipment at home means I have zero excuses. Just got off my torturous elliptical; I never would have made it to the gym today.

Whatever your decision is any business should be able to respect!! I joined a gym back in Cali too and they would NOT let me cancel membership even when I was moving. Ridiculous!!

The gym worked for me for about 6months. But now i have totally lost interest and am letting my membership go. I mostly run and i have some hand weights at home. That'll do it for now. Used to own a bowflex, never used it. It was such a pain to use. Hope you enjoy yours more. Jinx!

Hi Stephen. I both belong to a gym and have a weight bench and weights at home. Both have their advantages. I don't believe that people plateau without a gym and whomever said that to you is an a*s. One thing about being morbidly obese is there is no end to the people who want to make a profit off of our misery. The answer is within us, not in a product or a service that we can buy. If you could really buy it, mo one would be fat! I am thrilled to see you taking ownership of your progress and doing what is best for you. You get what you put into it no matter where you work out. I will say that the weight training really helps with the weight loss. I have a lot of new muscle still hidden under the fat, so nobody except me knows its there. But it inspires me and pushes me forward. You're rockin' it!

Cracker is smiling, yes?I quit the gym thing a long time ago when I realized that walking and some light weights is what I LIKE to do and will stick with. Going to the gym was a pain in the ass … I like convenience.Hope you like the Bowflex and it's nice that you have a buddy to work out with.

I was lucky in that both the Snap Fitness and Gold's gym in my areas gave me 1 week trials. They harassed the hell out of me in both places, but they weren't what I was looking for.I did settle on the local Community Center. MUCH cheaper, and its nice and quiet when I go there in off hours, also, the price was a lot lower (230 for a year). You might consider that if the Bowflex isn't what you were looking for.Keep it up!

Good for you taking control of the gym thing. I agree, people are going to work out because they WANT to, wherever that may be. I am a total workout at home person (well, that is when I work out I am!)So, keep on keeping on!

I think it's great you'll have your buddy to work out with I think that will make it easier. Good luck with the bowflex I'm sure you can get a good workout with it too.
